Portland’s home for epic concerts, sporting events and major gatherings, Northeast Portland’s Lloyd neighborhood beckons fans of all kinds from across the country, year-round. Easily accessible by car, public transport and bike, it’s the place where big games and great ideas generate arena-sized excitement.
Anchoring the area is the Rose Quarter, where the Moda Center is home to the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers and also hosts major touring musical acts and national sporting events. And with the ability to transform the space into into a more intimate venue called Theater of the Clouds, the arena also hosts smaller concerts, theatrical performances and speakers. Next door, the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks play at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which, with its innovative glass, aluminum and concrete design, has earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
While you can’t get on the ice at the coliseum, you can lace up your skates at the nearby Lloyd Center, of all places. Located on the shopping center’s first floor, the Lloyd Center Ice Rink offers a chance to hone your camel spin (or just attempt to stay upright) on the ice where former U.S. champion Tonya Harding learned her Salchows, loops and Axels.
Before games and events, spectators flock to Upright Brewing, located in the basement of the Leftbank Building, across the street from the Moda Center. Producing French- and Belgian-inspired farmhouse beers with open-barrel fermentation, the microbrewery’s tasting room is open on weekends and on Blazers game nights. Fans also fill up Spirit of 77, a home-grown sports bar where they can pre-game with free pop-a-shot games, and fuel up on pub fare with a gourmet spin. The bar’s name commemorates the year that the Blazers won their only championship.
Across the street, the Oregon Convention Center, the Pacific Northwest’s largest event space, is a hub for national meetings and also hosts frequent gatherings, from home and auto shows to the annual Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale, a showcase of locally made and whimsical craft goods just in time to help fulfill your holiday shopping list.
