From punk rockers to pilots, leather’s cool factor is undeniable — and it’s all the better if that leather item is crafted locally and built to last. A number of Portland artisans are using high-quality, beautifully tanned and sustainably dyed leather for their goods, crafting pieces that will last for decades (and survive style trends) to come.
Orox is a multigenerational Old Town shop that uses techniques passed down from owner Martin Martinez’s great-grandfather to create a line of sleek belts and accessories, including fashionable and functional items like bicycle panniers and roll-up tool kits.
Wood & Faulk
Founder Matt Pierce draws on his former life as a carpenter as inspiration for the hardy goods in his Wood & Faulk line, such as the ash hardwood and English bridle leather camping stool or waxed-canvas and leather carpenter bags. Available at Beam and Anchor.
Timeless design and buttery leather rule at Tanner Goods’ flagship West End shop. Look for deerskin gloves, good-for-20-years wallets and a growing list of collaborations, from Danner/Tanner boots to denim and leather bags made with jean company Tellason.
What started with a local architect making himself a leather bike-lock holder has turned into one of Portland’s most in-demand bike accessory brands. Locally designed and handcrafted in a Southeast Portland garage, Walnut Studiolo leather products like a bike six-pack holder and a travel cribbage set can be found around town (and the world) at shops like Joe Bike, which carries a full selection, or MadeHere PDX.
The Oregon ties of this rugged luxury leather brand run deep: Longtime leather designer Will Adler is based in Eugene, where the brand was founded in 1981. Will’s second brick-and-mortar store, their “homestead” location, is in downtown’s Union Way, and another on Northwest 23rd Avenue also houses Will’s Found line.
The polished, casual-chic handbags at Ellington are made from fine Italian leather. Totes, cross-body bags, hobos and more come in understated neutrals or bright colors, but all are destined to last for years to come.
