Since its grand opening in 2007, Cascade Station has become one of Portland’s top spots for big-box shopping. Conveniently located along the MAX light rail Red Line, two stops away from Portland International Airport, the Northeast Portland shopping center stretches over 120 acres (48.6 ha) and features 46 stores.

Cascade Station’s star attraction is IKEA, the massive Scandinavian furniture store full of model kitchens, nap-worthy mattresses and ready-to-assemble furnishings — not to mention IKEA’s famous Swedish meatballs. Once you’ve found your perfect shelves, deck them out with scented candles from Bath & Body Works or video games and electronics from Best Buy — all tax-free, of course!

Looking to reboot your wardrobe? Stop at the Banana Republic Factory Store, Marshalls and Ross Dress for Less. Find new looks at Dressbarn, Maurices and Lane Bryant, or stock up on sports gear at Golfsmith and Sports Authority. Woodworkers, hunters and other hardy types can find flame-resistant, rainproof jackets and other industrial-strength garments at Carhartt, along with endlessly useful multi-tools at Portland-based Leatherman. DSW Shoes and Shoe Mill promise cool new kicks and glittering accessories abound at Kay Jewelers and Morgan Jewelers.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite from carrying all those shopping bags, scope out Cascade Station’s crowd-pleasing eateries. Favorites include global plates at Panda Express, Taco Del Mar and Hot Pot ‘n Sushi, and all-American eats at IHOP, Red Robin, Famous Dave’s BBQ and Buffalo Wild Wings. Quench your thirst with a Frappuccino from Starbucks or a fresh smoothie from Jamba Juice or finish with a sweet treat from YoCream.

Looking for more? A short drive away, the original Danner Factory Store offers handcrafted heritage boots for hunting, hiking, work and play. A two-stop jaunt on the MAX Red Line takes you to Portland International Airport, which boasts a robust pre-security shopping scene including Nike, Pendleton, Powell’s Books and Columbia Sportswear. In fact, fliers with long layovers can easily take the MAX from PDX for a quick shopping spree at Cascade Station — just remember to save space in your suitcase!
