Blackfish Gallery, the earliest artist-owned and operated gallery in Portland and one of the longest continuously operating artists’ cooperatives in the United States, is celebrating its 45th birthday. One of the Northwest’s leading art groups and a pioneer in the city’s thriving art scene, Blackfish Gallery has been home to many of Portland’s most prominent artists, including Paul Missal, Barbara Black, and Kanetaka Ikeda.

Acknowledging its artistic achievements and reputation for exhibiting challenging contemporary work, the Portland City Council has announced that May 2 will officially become Blackfish Day. To celebrate, Blackfish will host a 45th anniversary party featuring art, installations, performances, and a series of community events. The kickoff will coincide with the May First Thursday art walk from 5 – 8 p.m.

Inside the gallery, visitors can enjoy exhibitions by Blackfish artists Kane Ikeda, Steven Soihil, Christopher Shotolo-Hardt, and Corey S. Pressman. Outside the gallery will be a variety of events and entertainments, including demonstrations and installations from Blackfish Gallery artists Lauren Carrera, Benjamin Mefford, and Noah Alexander Isaac Stein, representatives from community service organizations p:ear and Friendly House and performances and experiences provided by BodyVox, Sora Shodo, and Matt the Traveling Typist.
