Officially, Portland boasts only two major league sports: soccer and basketball. But any resident will tell you there’s a third game in town — brunch. With the talented roster of breakfast and brunch restaurants and the passionate dining fanbase that comes out to play every day, it’s no wonder Portland’s food scene thrives before lunch. Faithful believers queue up for tables in lines so epic they were fodder for Portlandia. From the comfort of biscuits and benedicts to kid-friendly pancakes and adult-friendly charcuterie and cocktails, brunch in Portland is a smorgasbord of the finest assortment.

Cricket Cafe
With an inclusive menu full of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, Belmont’s Cricket Cafe covers the brunch bases with omelets, skillets, pancakes and more.
Sweedeedeee
North Portland’s Sweedeedee is an “insanely cute little place,” as one reviewer put it, that shares a corner lot with the beloved Mississippi Records. Some level of emphasis should be placed on “little” here, as the cafe is quite small for its level of popularity. But bite into the corn cake plate with lemon curd, a buttery and delicious pastry, or a seasonal special from the rotating menu, and it all just makes sense.

Southern-Inspired
Screen Door
Even with locations in the Pearl District and on East Burnside, the wait can be daunting at this perpetually packed standout. Fortunately, Screen Door’s down-home brunch menu rarely fails to please guests. Try their smoked pork shoulder eggs Benedict, or enlist a friend to help tackle the jaw-dropping plate of crunchy fried chicken breasts stacked on a sweet-potato waffle. Whatever you order, pair it with a side of praline bacon or cheesy grits.
Pine State Biscuits
Every morning, rain or shine, locals line up for North Carolina-style buttermilk biscuits and gravy at Pine State Biscuits. Try the Reggie Deluxe, a biscuit sandwich of fried chicken, cheese, egg and bacon smothered with sausage or mushroom gravy. Growing from a beloved Portland Farmers Market pop-up, Pine State now has four locations on SE Division, NE Alberta, NE Schuyler and NW 23rd Ave.

Grits N’ Gravy
Grits N’ Gravy serves up soul-warming comfort food that evokes Southern home cooking in downtown Portland. The hearty menu includes classics like biscuits and gravy and omelets, but the “Uptown” shrimp and grits, with its rich Cajun cream sauce and andouille sausage, is one of the menu’s stars.
Portland Brunch Originals
Fat City Cafe
A longtime Multnomah Village favorite, the cash-only Fat City Cafe harkens to a different era with its vinyl booths, license-plate–lined walls and generous, old-school diner portions. The menu leans classic and satisfying, but the must-try standout is the giant cinnamon roll paired with a bottomless cup of coffee.
Cameo Cafe
With a menu that serves up Korean American fusion and a cozy, quirky atmosphere, the Cameo Cafe is a brunch experience all its own. The robust menu has plenty of options for all types of brunch lovers, but if the thought of a homemade kimchi omelet excites you, this is definitely your spot.
Bertie Lou’s Cafe
With its limited seating and unique takes on menu items like the Bertie Cristo, Bertie Lou’s is a Sellwood neighborhood brunch gem. Given its size and popularity, you should expect a wait, but as many raving reviewers put it, it’s well worth it.
The Original Pancake House
While you’ll find over 100 franchises of this chain across the U.S., this Portland site is The Original Pancake House. Founded in 1953 and lovingly maintained to look the same today, they’re still using real butter, house-made whipped cream, and fresh fruits in their fluffy pancakes and waffles. Try the delicious and enormous Dutch Baby or the mouth-watering cinnamon-glazed, Granny Smith-topped apple pancake.

Broder
It all started with a sunny little café serving traditional and playful takes on Nordic fare in the Division-Clinton neighborhood of Southeast Portland. But once people tasted the delicately baked eggs, aebleskivers (crispy pancake puffs with lingonberry jam), and bords (breakfast charcuterie boards), demand brought growth to North Portland and beyond. Don’t miss a chance to end your meal with an age-old Scandinavian digestif; they’re proudly serving the largest selection of aquavit on the West Coast.

Embracing Portland’s DIY culture, Slappy Cakes installed griddles at each table, allowing eaters to make their own pancakes with a selection of batters and toppings, including everything from berries and lavender honey to chocolate chips. Naturally, kids love this chance to cook and create for themselves (with supervision, of course).
Wonderwood Springs
From the imagination of Mike Bennett to your plate, the all-day weekend brunch menu at Wonderwood Springs includes breakfast sandwiches, burritos and scrambles with a hearty side of fun for the kiddos and kids of all ages. From the cartoon decor to the “eye spy” scavenger hunt and claw machine, you might not even need coffee before the first smile hits your face. Lighter breakfast options are also available during the week.
Tin Shed Garden Café
Tin Shed Garden Café is an Alberta Arts District breakfast staple. This funky little shack is notable for its rib-sticking provisions such as fluffy biscuits drenched in apple-wood-smoked bacon gravy and crisp potato cakes topped with free-range eggs and a veritable riot of organic veggies.
