Big things have happened for Voodoo Doughnut. In addition to almost single-handedly putting Portland on the doughnut map (and giving everyone a delicious taste of the “Keep Portland Weird” local flavor), the beloved purveyors of over-the-top treats made the Guinness Book of World Records in 2011 for the largest box ever filled with doughnuts. This feat followed the reopening of an expanded downtown location complete with a maple bacon bar memorialized in stained glass and more space than ever to fulfill every sweet desire, at any hour (Voodoo is open 24/7) — not to mention a second location that opened on Portland’s east side in 2008.

If you prefer your pastries a bit more traditional, local mini-chain Coco Donuts, has five convenient locations: downtown (just steps from Pioneer Courthouse Square), uptown (near Providence Park), on Northeast Broadway , on the Portland State University campus and in North Portland on Skidmore. There, you’ll find classic doughnut shapes and toppings, though you just might want to take a chance on the signature lavender glaze. Coco’s raised doughnuts are as light as air, and each espresso drink comes with a gratis doughnut hole.

Bridging the divide between zany and traditional doughnut offerings is Blue Star Donuts on North Mississippi Avenue. Inventive, gourmet glazes — like blueberry basil and bourbon or lemon poppyseed — top distinctively delicious brioche-like rings. Blue Star has a second shop on Southeast Division Street. There is also a Blue Star at PDX, so even short-term visitors can enjoy gourmet doughnut goodness.

In Northeast Portland, Pip’s Original is all about simplicity. The neighborhood cafe features an unbeatable selection of hand-mixed chai teas and fried-to-order mini-doughnuts. Tiny but mighty, Pip’s creations come in a basic cinnamon sugar flavor, an indulgent Nutella-drizzled number and a standout Himalayan sea salt version with local honey.

Delicious Donuts is a low-key, family-owned doughnut shop tucked among the warehouses of Central Eastside. You’ll want to get there early to tasty their classic pastries as they often sell out before closing.
