Having ushered in dining trends like farm-to-table meals and gourmet food carts, it’s no surprise that Portland offers plenty of gluten-free dining and drinking options.
100% Gluten-Free Restaurants
Entirely gluten-free, vegetarian and mostly vegan, Harlow, a Southeast Portland staple, serves three healthy and hearty meals a day, from oatmeal-banana pancakes to quinoa bowls to raw “pasta” made of shredded green papaya, carrots, collard greens, scallions and broccoli (and tossed in almond-butter pad thai sauce). A full range of fresh juices and smoothies are also on offer. You can also enjoy them on the westside.
With tasty empanadas filled with mushrooms or Beyond Meat accompanied by a delicious dipping sauce, and plenty of other tapas for sharing, Southeast Division Street’s Mestizo is 100% gluten-free. The fresh, pan-South-American menu features ceviches, soups, skewers and tacos that can accommodate many different dietary needs with vegetarian and vegan options.
With several locations across Portland, Verde Cocina piles plates with farmers’ market produce, garbanzo beans, earthy mole and tortillas hot from the griddle in their naturally gluten-free menu.
Bastion PDX, a 100% gluten-free, dairy-free, health food café from nutritionist Marné Minard serves up savory sandwiches and soups, with toasts and fresh-made pastries, and smoothies. Stop in for weekend brunch with salmon hash or fried chicken and waffle selections, and take some items from the deli case to-go.
Found at Mississippi Marketplace, the Indian food cart DesiPDX is dedicated gluten-free, serving up popadoms (crispy Indian-style chips), sweet cardamom chicken by the pound, and bowls or plates -depending on your hunger- with sides of pickles, sauces and plenty of options for vegans.
Bakeries
Petunia’s Pies & Pastries provides your fix of flaky crusts, with treats like the bumbleberry peach pie with hazelnut coconut streusel. Gluten Free Gem has been serving up tasty treats in a dedicated gluten-free facility since 2006. They offer a wide range of baked goods: cheesecake, coffee cake, cupcakes, muffins, cookies, doughnuts and many more. With gluten-free maple bars and chocolate-filled doughnut holes, New Cascadia Traditional often has a line come weekend mornings. Beyond morning pastries and a lox bagel, they are known for incredible gluten-free breads, including a challah loaf and baguette that will make you question if it is gluten-less.

As a city with more than 70 breweries, of course Portland has great gluten-free beer options. Ground Breaker Brewing crafts a range of ales using gluten-free oats and chestnuts in place of wheat or barley and malt. Seasonal offerings include the innovative Coffee Pale Ale. The gastropub menu features affordable snacks to complement the brews.
In Northeast Portland, check out Mutantis Cult Brewery for more great beer. If the gluten-free suds aren’t enough to lure you in, the kid- and dog-friendly patio should do the trick. - Andina: Peruvian tapas go gluten-free at this beloved Pearl District eatery, which features an extensive selection of flavorful options, including mouthwatering seafood dishes.
- Blossoming Lotus: Specializing in vegetarian and vegan fare, this popular café and juice bar has an innovative menu full of gluten-free dishes and smoothies.
- Deschutes Brewery & Public House: In addition to brewing gluten-free suds, Deschutes delights with an entire menu for the gluten-free diner, including exclusive eats like spicy paprika fries and a quinoa and cashew burger.
- Jade Teahouse: A popular Thai spot in Sellwood-Moreland, this eatery offers mostly gluten-free items, from fried coconut shrimp skewers to delectable pastries.
- Pambiche: Colorful and Cuban, this Northeast Portland standby has a full-fledged “alternativas” menu that caters to gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dieters, with items like tostones (fried green plantains served like french fries).
- Verde Cocina en la Perla: Using certified gluten-free corn masa, this farm-fresh, family-friendly restaurant and farmers’ market regularly makes its tortillas by hand and highlights local ingredients in its Mexican cuisine.
