When and Where to Pick Apples and Berries
Fruit tastes sweetest when picked straight from the vine, so grab your hat and sunscreen and head to Sauvie Island, a rural oasis just 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown Portland. This Manhattan-sized isle is home to a handful of welcoming farms flush with U-pick deals and family-friendly events. Or check out the Hood River County Fruit Loop about an hour east of Portland for a series of family-owned farms with a vast variety of apples, pears and other fruit.
While harvest times vary during the year, the U-pick season typically begins in June and lasts through October or November. Berry season begins with raspberries and strawberries becoming ripe around June, and the apple harvest starts in late July. Keep visiting Portland farms throughout the summer and into the fall — you can pick your own pumpkins for Halloween and grab some fresh berry and apple pies for your holiday celebrations.
Apple Picking in Portland
Douglas Farm is a Sauvie Island staple. For four generations, this family-run farm has provided local eaters with super-fresh fruits and veggies, including eight varieties of apples. Everything, from Gravenstein to Golden Delicious apples, is available for you to pick this fall.
Located about an hour east of Portland, the Draper Girls Farm guarantees family fun, with friendly farm animals for kids to pet and dwarf-sized trees, so no apple is too far out of reach for tiny hands. Located on the Hood River County Fruit Loop, Kiyokawa Family Orchards was established in 1951 by Mamoru Kiyokawa, a first-generation Japanese American who spent much of World War II in an internment camp. Today, this farm boasts a whopping 92 varieties of apples (including 25 U-pick options, the largest variety in the region) as well as 3 acres (1.2 hectares) of Asian pears.
Get ready to load up your wagon with treats from Mt. View Orchards, another treasure of the Hood River County Fruit Loop. With more than 80 varieties of apples and pears to choose from, a roster of family-friendly events (including the Harvest Fest and Swiss-Edelweiss Day) and their lovable mascot, Carlos the steer, Mt. View, 80 miles (129 km) east of Portland, is a must-visit.
Berry Picking on Sauvie Island
At Sauvie Island Farms, a local favorite for strawberries since the 1960s, visitors can fill their buckets with six delicious varieties of berries, including three types of raspberries. The cornucopia of cherries, blueberries and other fruit at nearby Bella Organic is 100% certified organic by Oregon Tilth. And Topaz Farm has a wide selection of U-pick produce, including boysenberries, Marionberries, tomatoes and peppers, along with frequent summer concerts and kid-friendly hayrides.
Oregon Farm Loops
Hungry for a truly farm-fresh meal? Take a family-friendly journey along a scenic Oregon Farm Loop in nearby Mt. Hood Territory. Located only 15-45 minutes from Portland, these self-guided tours include stops at dozens of fields and farm stands where visitors can forage their own fruit or grab pre-picked pints and even homemade berry pies.
For spring and summer flower-lovers, try the colorful Canby Farm Loop, which takes visitors through the rainbow fields of Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, the sweet-smelling gardens of Lavender Thyme Herb Farm and 40 acres (16.2 ha) of blooming buds at the country’s largest dahlia grower, Swan Island Dahlias. For fruit and family-friendly fun, the Farmlandia Farm Loop just south of Portland includes 20 stops, including the Fir Point Farms farm stand loaded with just-picked strawberries, peaches and pumpkins and a visit with miniature donkeys, sheep, llamas and Arabian horses at eco-friendly Tollen Farm.
Animals abound along the 35-mile (56 km) Molalla Country Farm Loop; visitors can meet majestic elk at Rosse Posse Acres Elk Ranch, buy sheepskin blankets at SuDan Farm and stock up on soft, handspun yarns from Alpaca Prairie. Fair Oaks Farm offers bushels of U-pick crops like carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and other ultra-fresh veggies, while fruit fans can harvest famously sweet Oregon Marionberries at Schmid Family Farm.
