A Star of the Portuguese Baroque: Josefa de Óbidos
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
Carmen Ripollés, art historian, author and professor of art history at Portland State University, discusses her recent book, Josefa de Óbidos, which explores the life and work of one of the most influential artists of the Portuguese Baroque. Drawing on years of research, Ripollés reexamines Josefa de Óbidos’ remarkable career, revealing how she achieved extraordinary artistic and professional success in the 17th century while challenging traditional assumptions about women artists. The talk will offer new perspectives on Baroque art, women’s history, and the enduring legacy of an artist whose work continues to reshape the understanding of the early modern Iberian world.
