Sacred Harp Singing Convention
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
The Sacred Harp singers of Portland are happy to invite one and all to join two days of singing from the 2025 edition of the Sacred Harp songbook. This is a free community event, open to all ages, and no singing experience is required. Songbooks will be available to buy or borrow for each day.
Shapenote singing is a 200-year-old American folk tradition of a capella, four-part harmony community singing. “Sacred Harp” refers to the human voice (there are no harps or other instruments involved in this music). This music is experiencing a revival across the country among a diverse group of singers of many ages and backgrounds, who are drawn to its primal harmonies and social approach to singing. People from all walks of life and various corners of the globe come together to make raucous, exuberant music for two full days of singing in unaccompanied, uninhibited four-part harmony.
This community music-making is fun and social, and there is no audience other than the singers themselves. All levels are welcome, including those with no music background.
As part of the tradition, a potluck dinner is held at noon each day by local singers, open to all participants.
Childcare provided 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Portland Sacred Harp is a fully inclusive, community-run group and is not affiliated with any religious or political organization, denomination or credo.
