Lion Reborn
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
Step inside one of Portland’s most beautiful spaces and encounter something unexpected. Lion Reborn is a new installation by Portland artist Josh Sin, featuring a suspended lion dance head and four wearable sculptural hats inspired by the cosmic guardians of Chinese mythology — the dragon, the tiger, the bird, and the tortoise. Each piece is stitched by hand from reclaimed fabric and upcycled martial arts uniforms, armor-shaped but soft to the touch. Together, they form a portal into an ancient world of protection, mythology, and craft. Part of Lan Su’s 2026 Lion Dance and Kung Fu exhibition series, Lion Reborn is a first glimpse of Sin’s forthcoming solo exhibition, A World Within, anticipated for 2027.
Every Friday in October from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sin will be present in the Scholar’s Courtyard to work on his pieces, speak about the mythology and craft traditions behind the exhibition, and invite visitors into the world of A World Within. Watch soft sculpture take shape from reclaimed fabric and found materials in one of Portland’s most serene outdoor settings. A rare chance to meet an artist at work. All ages welcome.
