The Imperfecta Gallery is excited to present Logo Stuff. Featuring a new body of work by artist Quire (aka Leah Hugon).

Scientists have found that, even in the most desolate of urban settings, when left to their own devices, extinct native plants will return home. In this new series of work, Quire continues to explore themes around the connection with, and divorce from, nature. These works feature paintings of contemporary commercial properties, some vacant and some occupied, bordered by the plants that would have thrived in these specific locations. The plants not only grow in these places but also serve functions similar to those of the buildings that have displaced them. A closed pharmacy is paired with Mullein, a plant with several medicinal uses, native to the region and just waiting to share its gifts.

Growing up religious, Quire still has bible stories in her head, and while working on these paintings, one story in particular came to mind. When the Israelites were led out of Egypt to be set free from slavery and the rule of Pharaoh, they eventually chose a king to lead them again, even though their God had provided a leader in Moses. What is being chosen today, and what is overlooked and lost in those choices? Has society made choices that benefit everyone or ones that just feel familiar or convenient? Quire invites the viewer to learn about the plants in her work, to discover their gifts, resilience and wisdom, while pondering choices as a society and where they lead.

The show debuts on June 4, with an Opening Reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

Quire (Leah Hugon) is an artist, mother, and forager living in the PNW. She was raised in church and went to art school at a religious university and has spent her adult life rediscovering faith, human existence, and her own truth. Quire has traveled the world for humanitarian work, organized and performed with an indie rock band, and has had a consistent art practice for the last 15 years. Her work seeks to connect us to each other and our world in deep and meaningful ways by weaving themes of our shared human experience with stories from her and her community into her mixed-media artwork.
