Moonlight
Guest programmed by Black Art and Experiences (BAE), Moonlight (2016) is featured as part of our film series Pretty, Witty and Gay—in conversation with the David Hockney exhibition. Moonlight, the Academy Award–winning film directed by Barry Jenkins, is told across three chapters of a young man’s life. Moonlight offers a deeply intimate portrait of identity, tenderness, and self-discovery through luminous color, gesture, and atmosphere. Presented alongside the David Hockney exhibition, the film echoes Hockney’s exploration of looking, longing, and the emotional power of image-making. Together, the screening and exhibition invite audiences to consider how artists across media use color, light, and portraiture to reveal interior worlds and expand representations of love, vulnerability, and belonging.
