Cheryl Dunye with The Lesbian Cinema Club
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
Join Lesbian Cinema Club for a night of Cheryl Dunye’s short films.
The Lesbian Cinema Club is a Portland-based screening series and gathering that began in the summer of 2025 as a fundraiser for top surgery for lead organizer and programmer Noname. The series began in a backyard with a few friends, with a simple goal of watching and learning about Lesbian artists and filmmakers while fundraising for gender-affirming care. The series quickly became a large community gathering for local queer and lesbian film-lovers.
ON SCREEN: Cheryl Dunye Short Films
1990 – 1996. Directed by Cheryl Dunye. Not Rated.
Known as the first out Black lesbian to ever direct a feature film with her 1996 film The Watermelon Woman, Cheryl Dunye’s career includes two additional features, including The Owls, and another short (Black is Blue), as well as directorial work in both film and television. Her work often concerns themes of race, sexuality, and gender, particularly issues relating to Black lesbians, and integrates documentary techniques into much of her narrative work. The Film Collaborative is thrilled to be able to team up with her once again to showcase her important work.
