Jay Som
An indie singer/songwriter noted for her lush and textured production style as well as her pensive songs, Jay Som is the alias of multi-instrumentalist Melina Duterte. She collected early demos and previously shared songs for her first label release, Turn Into, in 2016. Jay Som refined and expanded her stylized sound while continuing to record at home for albums including 2019’s Anak Ko. In 2021, she teamed up with El Kempner of Palehound to form the duo Bachelor. Meanwhile, she became an in-demand session player and producer/engineer for others. After working on albums for indie acts such as Chastity Belt, Chris Farren, and Whitmer Thomas, she was one of the producers on boygenius’ hit debut album, 2023’s The Record, and toured with them on bass. Her preference for collaboration extended to her next solo LP, 2025’s Belong, a set of lush indie pop/rock that found her working in professional studios with several other producers and musicians.
