Pittock Mansion: Home for the Holidays
Pittock Mansion will take visitors on an unforgettable journey through the golden years of the mansion on a decades-themed tour, spanning from the 1910s to the 1950s, when the magnificent mansion was home to the Pittock family across different generations. Opening alongside the holiday event is an inspiring exhibition on the life and art of Harry Wentz, who left a lasting legacy not only as a talented Portland artist but also as a mentor to many of the other 20th-century Portland artists.
As part of the expanded and reimagined version of the Home for the Holidays event, visitors can enjoy festive displays across nineteen rooms in the Mansion and four rooms in the Gate Lodge, each artfully decorated to reflect a nesting of five iconic decades — from the 1910s through the 1950s. A curated handout will guide the visitors through various stops. A festive 1920s breakfast room will sparkle with pop-culture flair—period details, a tinsel tree evoking Hollywood glamour, and pearl-adorned windows that fill the space with nostalgic holiday cheer. In another room, visitors will discover how a snowy view from a sleeping porch during the Great Depression inspired the beloved Christmas song “Winter Wonderland.” This display will explore the era’s holiday traditions, innovations, and enduring spirit of joy during one of America’s most challenging times. The Gate Lodge will showcase the 1950s, when exciting advances in science and technology brought optimism for a modern and better future.
