Heather Watkins | Visual Fields
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
PDX CONTEMPORARY ART is pleased to present Visual Fields, a solo exhibition by Heather Watkins.
Visual Fields consists of photogravure etchings, direct gravure etchings, and collagraphs made in collaboration with Mullowney Printing, presented alongside installations of the artist’s evolving collection of objects, ephemera, and artwork.
Heather Watkins’ practice is rooted in process-oriented, material-based ways of working that explore time, matter, and memory. Her work often begins outside the studio while on walks, where she witnesses the changing nature of our world. Back in the studio, she allows these observations to guide experimentation, seeking to arrive at something unforeseen and to uncover unexpected ways of meeting the world. The twelve photogravure and direct gravure etchings reflect some of these moments in time, capturing growth, movement, change, decay, and renewal cycles. The collagraphs, made using cutaway shapes from her previous sculptures, Unbound Volumes (2022), are assembled in loose, layered compositions before passing through the press, resulting in beautifully layered and textured prints.
Both bodies of work pull from familiar sources, parts of another process or time, which are then reassembled into a new order and context. By arranging remnants from past projects into different configurations and introducing new techniques and elements, the works in Visual Fields connect Watkins’ earlier work with the new, reprising and recombining materials and language she has been working with for years.
