Called “a dazzling debut” by Variety, The Queen of My Dreams is a vibrant, genre-blending story of identity, family, and queer self-discovery. Directed by Fawzia Mirza and starring Amrit Kaur (The Sex Lives of College Girls), the film moves between 1960s Karachi and modern-day Canada in a Bollywood-inspired swirl of memory, grief, and joy.
ON SCREEN: The Queen of My Dreams
2025. Directed by Fawzia Mirza. Runtime: 1 hour 37 minutes.
Azra is worlds apart from her conservative Muslim mother. When her father suddenly dies on a trip home to Pakistan, Azra finds herself on a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories, both real and imagined, from her mother’s youth in Karachi to her own coming-of-age in rural Canada.
ON STAGE: DJ Anjali
Anjali is a DJ, dancer, and artist. Her work is primarily concerned with creating a collective memory through songs, dance, and imagery while pushing forward a working-class, immigrant feminist agenda on the dance floor. As a DJ and dance floor instigator, she has worked to promote the future and vintage sounds of the South Asian and Desi diaspora within the larger Global Bass movement. She moves between two styles of performance, from behind the decks as a DJ to the front of the stage as a Bhangra dancer, all the while exploring her own identity and using the dance floor as a place to build solidarity
