Primordial Sounds: Tuvan Throat Singing and New Art
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
Located in the heart of the Pearl District, across the street from Wieden+Kennedy, The Residency is Portland’s newest destination for innovative art exhibitions and experiences and is open four times a year. Join Art Gallery / Studio “The Residency” for its Summer First Thursday Art Exhibit, Primordial Sounds — exploring the ancient impulses that translate to the modern world through art and sound.
Primordial Sounds features The Residency Artists, Pippa Arend and Leah Kohlenberg and guest artists, Painter Zhanna Tsytsyn and Tuvan throat singing performances by Soriah.
Siberian-born painter Tsytsyn creates surreal, metaphysical, abstract landscapes and figurative work that reflects the natural world and the inner landscape. Soriah is an international award-winning Tuvan throat singer, performance artist and shamanic ritualist.
Residency artist Pippa Arend is exploring the theme of primordial sounds by reinventing the idea of a family tree, and expressions of kin and culture that transcend time. Animal and tree skins, bone inks, plant cordage, pitch and gold. These are the materials of the ancestors. Residency artist Leah Kohlenberg is looking at Primordial Sounds through the lens of a new contemporary cityscape series, in which light and sound refract and pulse, creating the illusion of movement and sound on a static canvas.
Join us for an evening of new art, snacks, and three concerts by Soriah.
