The following description was submitted by the event organizer.

Using rare and seldom-seen objects like Chinese opera costumes as well as theatrical sets, bilingual text, audiovisual media and interactive visitor stations, Beyond the Gate tells a sprawling transnational story of contact and trade between China and the West, focusing on Portland’s Old (1850-1905) and New (1905-1950) Chinatowns.

Beyond the Gate was originally created as a temporary exhibit for the Oregon Historical Society by Dr. Jacqueline Peterson-Loomis with the help of Carey Wong, Exhibition Designer, Jennifer Fang, Associate Curator and the Portland Chinatown History Foundation. It was presented for three months in the spring of 2016, then dismantled. With the help of the Oregon Historical Society, it is now a permanent exhibit at the new Portland Chinatown Museum, and has been expanded from the original version. Please call the museum at 503.224.0008 for more information.
