The Band Ice Cream A familiar spirit drives the tongue-in-cheek and emotionally undressed songs of Play Dead. The collection’s lead single, "Chemical Fire," celebrates the human need to love repeatedly throughout life, even in the face of loss. In "Heartstrings," songwriter Kevin Fielding critiques the police state, contrasting 'tax dollars' with 'body counts'. "Algorithmic Apathy," a punky, two-faced melodic blizzard, details "the pageantry and duality of our always-connected-social-media-churning" lives.
The intense themes in Play Dead continue the trajectory set by their 2017 and 2018 albums, transforming The Band Ice Cream from a beloved house show band to a national touring act. The band's core — Fielding (guitar, vocals), Dante Johnson (drums), Dahlia Amade (bass), and Clayton Silva (guitar, keys) — share an approach that packages their message in songs that leave listeners both contemplative and ready to jump into the mosh pit.
