Extreme
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
Arriving during the heyday of hair metal, Extreme initially seemed to neatly fit into the glam scene: they boasted big hair, big hooks, a powerful singer in the form of Gary Cherone and, in Nuno Bettencourt, they had a shredder who could hold his own with the likes of Eddie Van Halen. By Extreme II: Pornograffitti, the Boston-based group demonstrated their eagerness to leave cliches behind, simultaneously digging deeper into metal while broadening their purview to encompass funk, pop and, in the form of "More Than Words," gentle harmonies that hearkened back to the Everly Brothers. "More Than Words" brought Extreme a number one single in 1991, a success they nearly replicated later that year with the propulsive "Hole Hearted." Still, the group was waylaid by forces beyond their control: by the time they delivered III Sides to Every Story in 1992, mainstream rock had traded big hair for flannel, then Cherone left the band to replace David Lee Roth in Van Halen. Bettencourt pulled the plug on Extreme shortly afterward, but the group reunited in 2004, releasing the Saudades de Rock album in 2008. Although it took them 15 years to deliver the follow-up Six in 2023, Extreme never split: they continued to tour regularly over the years.
