The following description was submitted by the event organizer.

An evening of community dancing, singing and music-making in the Irish tradition, known as a “Rambling House,” is returning to the Portland community after a two-year hiatus. An afternoon of Irish cultural events, including singing circles, music sessions, dance/music workshops, and a potluck supper culminating in an old-fashioned dance party called a Céilí Mór with live traditional Irish music. This event is open to the community and all ages and experience levels.

This Rambling House is sponsored by the Mícheál Ó Domhnaill Branch of Oregon, a non-profit, local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, whose aim is to promote traditional Irish music, dance and culture.

During the afternoon, there will be concurrent programming, including a guided slow session for instrumental beginners, a tune learning workshop for musicians, a set and céilí dance workshop, and a guided singing circle. There will also be a brief lesson at the beginning of the Céilí Mór for newcomers. All dances will be called, which means the moves will be explained and demonstrated, then a walk-through before they are danced to live music. Céilí dances are group dances often danced at parties and social events. Set dances are similar to square dances, danced in groups of 8 dancers. These are not Riverdance or high-stepping competitive dances, but a dance you can enjoy from youth to old age. Check the organization’s website at www.cceoregon.org/events/ramblinghouse for a detailed schedule.

There is an open donation at the door as this is a community open house and a fundraising endeavor to support ongoing cultural programming for more information, contact cceoregon@gmail.com.
