Visual Fluidity: The Animated Films of Neely Goniodsky

Seattle-based filmmaker Neely Goniodsky presents an evening of her visually hypnotic animated films that span the course of 13 years. Incorporating ink, paint and cut-out animation, Goniodsky’s dream-like creations swirl through stories of meaning-searching, finding love, losing love, fears, joys, hopes and so much more.
Works to be screened include Splash (2012), which illustrates Goniodsky’s lifelong love of ink blotches through the story of a couple growing old together. The story unfolds amongst colorful ink splashes, all set to a jazzy soundtrack.
Night Walk (2016), a surreal animation of night visions and experiences, creates a visual waking dream.
Behind the Bars (2017) is an interpretation of poet Edward Smith Jones’s uphill battle through institutional oppression.
The Flame in Mother’s Mouth (2019) is an abstracted interpretation of the poem by Dustin Pearson, from his collection A Family is a House.
In addition to these films, Neely will set up a looping, animated installation, titled Vacuum, in the Stevens boardroom next to the Whitsell auditorium. In the installation, hand-drawn characters mirror the audience’s movement, telling a story of suburban boredom and isolation. Stay after the films for a Q&A with the director.
