Discover the ancient music of ninth-century nun, poet and hymnographer Kassianë, a.k.a. Kassía. Hear an ensemble of female and male psaltës (cantors) sing rarely heard music by Byzantium’s most formidable and prolific female composer. New discoveries, researched and led by Cappella Romana music director and founder Alexander Lingas, complement her famous Hymn of Kassianë from Orthodox Holy Week and When Augustus reigned from Christmastide. Bold in her life and fervent in her faith, Kassía’s voice is unlike any other, on full display in this can’t-miss program.

"Local choir Cappella Romana specializes in making old music new. It often performs music from the Orthodox Liturgical Tradition — even commissioning new works from living Orthodox composers. More important is its work in preserving the music of the past: promoting and performing the reconstructed 1917 “Requiem” of Russian composer Alexander Kastalsky, or collaborating with a team of scientists to recreate the acoustic environment of medieval Byzantium’s Hagia Sophia cathedral. In its “Hymns of Kassianë” concert, director and founder Alexander Lingas presents the results of his research into the music of a “formidable and prolific” ninth century Byzantine nun, poet and composer." – Oregon Arts Watch
