Wine enthusiasts know Oregon for its pinot noir, but there are plenty of other reasons to visit local vineyards. These include spectacular views, budget-friendly flights and tasting rooms made for slowing down and staying awhile. These wineries near Portland feature several varietals — including, yes, pinot noir — making for an ideal escape from the city.

Wineries Near Portland

Cooper Mountain Vineyard

Rustic charm abounds at Cooper Mountain Vineyard in Beaverton. Free-range chickens wander the grounds near the tasting room (located inside a converted horse barn). But don’t let the casual farm-feel fool you: This is serious wine. Owner Dr. Robert Gross and his wife Corrine planted the first vines here in 1978. Today, five varietals (pinot gris, pinot blanc, tocai friulano, chardonnay and pinot noir) are grown using organic and biodynamic practices. The Cooper Mountain team calls their practice “homeopathy for the vines.”

Taste a five-wine flight for $15 while soaking up views of the Chehalem Mountains. On Friday summer evenings, the winery stays open until 8 p.m., allowing you to sip while watching the sunset.

Open daily, noon–5 p.m. (Open until 8 p.m. on Fridays from mid-June through the first week of September.)

“Fine food and fine wine with friends in the garden.” This is the motto of Burl and Cindy Mostul, owners of Villa Catalana Cellars, located 35 minutes south of Portland. Opened in 2014, the winery sources grapes from four specialty vineyards in the Pacific Northwest. Their wines include pinot noir and syrah, along with an award-winning Cascade Berry fortified wine liquor.

The Mostuls’ sprawling home is inspired by a 12th-century Spanish church. The courtyard tasting room, located in the courtyard, doubles as a tropical plant conservatory showcasing rare species from around the world. Taste six wines for $10 ($5 refundable with wine purchase) and enjoy a self-guided stroll through the property. The grounds boast beautiful Mediterranean-style gardens, a pond and a bocce ball court.

Open Saturdays, 1–4 p.m.

Helvetia Winery

You can drop in to Helvetia Winery for a five-wine flight, but it’s worth it to book a tour. The winery is located just 15 minutes west of Portland at the foothills of the Tualatin Mountains. During the tour, learn about grape growing and the land’s rich history from proprietor, farm manager and vintner John Platt. At the farmhouse-turned-tasting room, sample Helvetia’s current collection. A traditional flight includes gewürztraminer, pinot gris, two pinot noirs and a sangiovese, paired with tribal-caught Columbia River smoked salmon. The tasting-only fee is $10 (waived with bottle purchase), while a tasting with a tour is $15.

Open Friday–Sunday, 12–5 p.m.

Hamacher Wines

One of Oregon’s oldest vineyards is found 30 minutes southwest of downtown Portland at Hamacher Wines, formerly Ponzi Historic Estate. This boutique winery features vineyard views from its tasting room housed in the original home of the winery’s first winemaker.

You can sample flights of either Hamacher or Ponzi wines for $15. Find a favorite, then splurge on a bottle. The winery allows outside food, so you can swirl, sip and picnic all at once. (Bocce game on the estate court is optional.)

Open Wednesday–Sunday, 11–5 p.m.

Urban Wineries in Portland

Driven by winemakers motivated to move their operations closer to where they live and socialize, Portland has nearly a dozen urban wineries.
