Pearl District & NW Portland Brewery Tour

Imbibe at Portland beer giants, local favorites and outposts of renowned breweries from around the region.

Updated Oct. 4, 2023 4 min read Northwest Portland

Filled with chic boutiques, galleries and dining destinations, the upscale Pearl District and charming Northwest Portland (aka Nob Hill) are just a quick streetcar hop from downtown. Home of the historic Brewery Blocks, where Henry Weinhard launched Portland’s brewing legacy in the 1860s, the area also claims a diverse mix of local and regional breweries, making it a favorite site for a Beervana pilgrimage.

Von Ebert Brewing

Taking over space previously occupied by Fat Head’s Brewery, Von Ebert Brewing opened in 2018. Named after the owner’s maternal great-grandmother, Von Ebert brews up German-inspired lagers, a large variety of IPAs, special releases and more. Looking for something without the gluten? The brewery also offers gluten-free options to enjoy while watching your favorite team on one of the nine flat-screen TVs.

Beer Festivals in Portland

Portland isn't shy about its love of beer — the city has nearly as many beer festivals as it does breweries.

Deschutes Brewery

The next leg of your tour features several breweries that got their start outside of Portland — Deschutes Brewery is up first. Based in Bend, Oregon, this brewery is famous for its chocolaty Black Butte Porter, hoppy Mirror Pond Pale Ale and bold Inversion IPA. Expect all three on tap here, along with an ever-changing list of experimental, made-in-Portland brews (past experiments have yielded fun results like Smoked Oyster Stout and Birdshot ISA). Healthy portions of locally inspired (and sourced) dishes like elk burgers, Dungeness crab rolls, and mac and cheese prepared with the brewery’s creamy stout also make Deschutes a popular dining destination.

Backwoods Brewing

In 2012, Backwoods Brewing got its start in Carson, Washington, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Columbia River Gorge. They brought their brand of rustic Pacific Northwest brewing to the Pearl District in 2018. Try one of their core beers — like the Logyard IPA or the Post Trail Pale — or go for a special release. Their family-friendly dining room is a great place to fill up on bar food classics like chicken wings, nachos and burgers. They also offer local wine, craft cocktails and happy hour specials.

10 Barrel Brewing

The second Bend-based brewery of the day, 10 Barrel Brewing exploded onto the scene in 2006. Today you can experience their fun, friendly culture at a number of brewpubs across the West — including the one on Northwest Flanders Street. You’ll come for the 20 taps of tempting brews and the elevated pub fare; you’ll stay for the awesome, expansive rooftop patio.

Kells Brewery

If you like your beer Irish and your food hearty, don’t miss a stop at Kells Brewery. Sip pints of Irish-style lager, red ale and stout while chowing down on classics like Reubens and shepherd’s pie. Happy hour deals will save you a few bucks if you visit on a weekday. Weekend visits have their advantages too — Kells has live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Lucky Labrador Beer Hall

Pooches are a welcome part of the family at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall, a Northwest Quimby Street outpost of the beloved brewery that helped Portland rise to prominence as a microbrewing mecca in the 1990s. Their sprawling warehouse space offers plentiful seating, a dog-friendly covered patio and good vibes. Order up a pint of rich Black Lab Stout and a slice of the brewery’s signature barley-flour pizza.

Breakside Brewery

Stop when you see the striking mural, the angular sign and the lofted rafters; you’ll know you’re in the right place when you settle into your seat in Breakside Brewery’s modern, spacious taproom. Their award-winning beers run the gamut from bright summer ales to pitch-black barrel-aged stouts; there’s also no shortage of excellent IPAs. An impressive 16 taps, with even more options in bottles and cans, means everyone in your party will find something to love. Their extensive menu of salads, soups, burgers and sandwiches is sure to satisfy too.
