When you think of streetwear, certain locations come to mind, and they may not include the gently shaded lanes of Portland. But Portland is home to the global headquarters of classic streetwear and sneaker industry mainstays like Nike and adidas. We also have cutting-edge sneaker boutiques stocking clothes from Japanese streetwear brands catering to sneaker culture connoisseurs, people into high fashion, local artists, techwear collectors and everybody else. Not to mention more vintage products and clothing than anyone can cover in just one article. And it’s all completely tax-free.

More than just a destination for sneakers, Portland streetwear has its own flavor that leans heavily into curation and exemplifies the city’s tendency toward function, comfort and eye-catching visuals.

“We like to see a guy come in, buy a pair of Hokas and mix them with Rick [Owens] pants,” says Justin Machus, owner of streetwear boutique, MACHUS, “Something like On Running will do a collab with a niche Korean brand like Post Archive Faction, and we’ll sell it to a sneakerhead. There’s a lot of crossover, and it’s really cool seeing all these guys blend it all together, especially with vintage and archival, and that it’s happening in Portland.”

Quintessentially Portland Brands

We can’t talk about Portland streetwear style without talking about the big two: Nike and adidas, both with headquarters in or near Portland. Visitors can check out the Nike Portland store in downtown’s Pioneer Place, along with other well-known brands like Gucci and Tiffany & Co. In Northwest Portland, visit the Adidas Employee Concept Store through invite only, which you can request through their app available on Apple or Android.

For the fashion-forward futch or butch in your life, Wildfang is another Portland-born brand taking the world by storm. One of the only streetwear or workwear brands to market themselves exclusively to women, femmes and nonbinary people, their eye-catching patterns, artfully constructed pieces and signature attitude are available in sizes XS to 4X. Nearby, Portland Gear offers waterproof bags and even water-resistant loungewear sets for those classic rainy Portland days.

One of the most Portland streetwear companies of all time has to be Stackin Kickz at Lloyd Center. Every thread of their 100% cotton sneaker-themed apparel drips with Portland love and original design. This Black-owned brand is well known for investing in the future of entrepreneurship in the city, and the store is frequently a stop for up-and-coming Portland makers and innovators.

No Portland fit would be complete without repping the home team. Hit up the Portland Trail Blazers Store, also called the Rip City Clothing Company, open Tuesday through Saturday and during games at the Moda Center.

Cultivating The Portland Style

Most streetwear shops in Portland offer a combination of the brand’s own line and a carefully selected collection of other pieces to catch the eye and stir the spirit. MACHUS in downtown has a striking black and white color palette with the occasional earth tone as a treat. Just a short roll or walk away, BAIT prominently features its highly sought-after collaborations with other brands, IPs and artists. Unspoken in Old Town uses brightly colored pieces to guide shoppers through the store. Nearby, Japanese streetwear specialists Nakamuraya curate a retail experience grounded in both contemporary and vintage Japan. In Nob Hill, Benchmark utilizes modular displays to create a new gallery-like experience to showcase emerging brands that align with house-produced shows and events.

Vintage, Consignment and Trade

No Portland shopping spree is complete without some sick vintage or consignment to make for a truly unique experience. “Portland has its own style … where it mixes hipster and streetwear. We have our own silhouette,” says Jalen Thomas, co-owner of Back to the Basket on Hawthorne. This sport- and streetwear vintage shop is stuffed to the brim with pieces you can’t find anywhere else, including an entire wall of rare and sought-after sneakers. Down the street, Pallet Portland offers a vibe-forward space with pared-down fixtures, a skate ramp and even an adorable shop dog; here, find a vintage anime shirt, a rare shoe or an old jersey from a favorite player. For those after sneakers and sneakers only, Index is a sneakerhead’s consignment dreamland, where you can get some classic Dunks for a steal, drop a pretty penny on those Air Jordans you can’t stop thinking about, or even sell your own shoes for a profit if they’re good enough. Laundry in the artsy Alberta neighborhood welcomes shoppers into an expertly organized showroom of vintage sport jerseys, hats, jackets and more. Talk to the owner, Christopher Yen, and he’ll help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

Inspired by Streetwear

No article on streetwear in Portland would be complete without acknowledging the most Portland of all intersections: sneakers and coffee, of course. Deadstock Coffee is a small coffee chain started by a sneakerhead and former sneaker developer. Drop in for a Lebronald Palmer and get the scoop on what’s new in the sneaker world. If you’re in town during the summer, be sure to come to Sneaker Week, a full week of events, educational opportunities, and networking for sneakerheads and streetwear culture.

Far Out Streetwear in Portland

Before we wrap up, let’s be honest with ourselves. Streetwear couture is nice and all, but sometimes you just want to go where there’s a 50-foot-long wall (15m) of technicolor hats that say things like Los Doyers and 503 STEEZ; where you can find a one-of-a-kind Tupac hoodie or maybe just wade through seven racks of knock-off Juicy sweatpants from 2001. Find it all on Southeast 82nd Avenue, one of Portland’s most diverse areas. Check out Gen X or Top to Bottom, then stick around and pick up some boba, feast on a crab boil or grab a burrito for the rideshare back to downtown.
