Celebrating its fifth iteration since launching in 2017, My People’s Market returned Nov. 8–9, bringing together more than 100 local vendors and 5,000 attendees, and generating over $56,000 in sales (and counting) — its highest grossing market yet. The two-day marketplace took place in North Portland for the first time, occupying Self Enhancement Inc. (SEI) in the heart of the city’s historic Boise neighborhood.

“Ten minutes after we opened the market it was packed,” said Michelle Comer, Travel Portland’s Senior Destination Manager – Equity & Community Affairs. “People were waiting in line to come in. I think people were excited to support the event and be intentional with where they spend their money.”

The first day of My People’s Market was a preview happy hour party and trade show, with special deals and a free wellness lounge and salon. Willamette Week’s Give! Guide hosted the Give Back Room, where attendees met with local nonprofits (all with a focus on racial justice and equity), signed up for volunteer opportunities and learned more about the organizations’ work. The trade show drew 45 buyers from 30 different retailers and hospitality partners, including representatives from New Seasons Market, Market of Choice, Portland Trail Blazers, People’s Food Co-op, Tender Loving Empire and Metro.

On Saturday, the bustling public marketplace offered live music and performances, interactive art and delicious food and drink. By the end of the event (which was free to attend), the average sale for vendors was $622, the highest vendor average yet.

“I love seeing people of color making their dreams come true,” said T Ngu, owner of Upper Metal Class. “The vibe, the vendors music entertainment and overall experience is beautiful it’s a place where I feel inspired.”

My People’s Market is a collaboration of Travel Portland, Mercatus and Prosper Portland, with local organization Young, Gifted and Brown (Y.G.B.) curating all of the event’s live entertainment. New Seasons Market and Portland State University’s School of Business were sponsors of this year’s event.
