Portland Visitors Map & Guide

Our map and guide to Portland can help you plan the perfect trip.

Getting Your Bearings

In our classic quirky fashion, Portland’s six main geographical sections (North, Northeast, Northwest, South, Southeast and Southwest) are referred to by residents as the city’s “quadrants.” The city is divided into north and south by Burnside Street and into east and west by the Willamette River.

Portland has more than 90 formally recognized neighborhoods with distinct boundaries. Our highlighted neighborhood and street guides highlight some of the best places to explore as a visitor to the city, where many restaurants and shops are consolidated.

Portland’s Quadrants

Explore the six “quadrants” (yes — there are six of them!) that make up the City of Roses.

Southwest Portland

Best known for lively downtown Portland, this quadrant is also home to Washington Park’s numerous attractions, Goose Hollow’s blend of historic and modern, the small-town charm of Multnomah Village and more.

a colorful map of Southeast Portland highlighting prominent neighborhoods and landmarks

Southeast Portland

Southeast Portland embodies many of Portland’s best-known attributes: hip, artsy, quirky, foody. It’s home to popular neighborhoods, lively food-and-drink districts, peaceful parks and more.

Northwest Portland

Northwest Portland is a study in contrasts, from swank shops and restaurants in the central city to the natural beauty of Forest Park — and everything in between.

Northeast Portland

For shows, sports and big events, Northeast Portland is hard to beat. It’s also home to many popular neighborhoods, noteworthy sights and attractions, and top-notch restaurants and bars.

North Portland

From the beautiful blooms of Peninsula Park to the bustle of North Mississippi Avenue, there’s more to explore in North Portland. The so-called “Fifth Quadrant” is home to charming neighborhoods, striking landmarks and unique attractions.

South Portland

South Portland is a slim strip of land on the west side of the Willamette River. This laid-back river community is a perfect 10 for water recreation, low-key urban green spaces and lots of spots to eat, drink & shop.

The Central City

Portland's central city includes several distinct districts on both the west and east sides of the Willamette River. On the west side is Downtown, where you'll find arts, retail, restaurants and the highest concentration of hotels; Old Town Chinatown, a historic district now home to streetwear shops and Chinese and Japanese cultural destinations; the Pearl District, with its galleries, restaurants and stores; Goose Hollow, offering Major League Soccer at Providence Park; and South Portland, where the South Waterfront district offers river access.

On the east side, Lloyd is home to the Oregon Convention Center and Moda Center, which hosts NBA games and concerts; while the Central Eastside includes many restaurants and shops, as well as the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI).

Beyond Portland

Portland is the perfect launchpad for adventure, with the rugged Oregon Coast, snow-capped Mount Hood, lush wine country and waterfall-filled Columbia River Gorge all within easy driving distance of the city.

Whether your interests are surfing, skiing, sipping or just trying something new, the region around Portland is ripe for exploration.

Getting Around in Portland

Is downtown Portland walkable?

Portland is a wonderful city for walking. The downtown area is very compact, meaning there are many things to see in a small area, like parks, restaurants, and museums that are easily accessible by foot. We recommend doing the 4T trail, where you can hitch a ride on trains, trails, trams and trolleys as you walk about the city in a 4-hour self-guided tour!

How much does it cost to ride public transportation in Portland?

TriMet bus, MAX Light Rail and Portland Streetcar fares are as follows:

Adult (ages 18–64): $2.50 to ride for 2.5 hours; $5 for a day pass
Honored Citizen (ages 65 years and older; low income, Medicare or disability): $1.25 to ride for 2.5 hours; $2.50 for a day pass

Do I need a car in Portland?

There are plenty of ways to travel around Portland without renting a car. In addition to car- and ride-share services, the city also has an extensive public transportation system that includes bus service, the MAX light rail and a streetcar. There’s also the option to rent a bike or electric scooter or simply hoof it.

Are there car-free bike paths in Portland?

Hit the town on two wheels via a bike ride around Portland’s designated bikeways. Marked street paths and clear bike lanes are available all across town, which is great for commuters and travelers alike. Many bike paths cross stunning views or beautiful parks and gardens. If you didn’t bring your own wheels, use the bike-share program, which also includes adaptable bikes for people with disabilities.
