What gives Portland the right to claim the handle of Bike City, U.S.A.? Well, it could be the 315 miles of bikeways, or the nation's highest percentage of bike commuters (7%), or the city's preponderance of bike-themed events, from a film festival to a two-week cycling extravaganza. No matter how you look at it, Portland is crazy for bikes — and that spirit makes it the perfect place for visitors to saddle up.

The city's progressive bicycle transportation program includes wide, clearly marked bike lanes on most major commuter routes; municipal bike racks; and access to bridges. Adding to the bike-friendly atmosphere, TriMet buses are equipped with bike racks, and bikes are also welcome aboard all MAX light rail trains. The nonprofit Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA), as well as the volunteer Bicycle Advisory Committee and a city bicycle coordinator, work to keep things running smoothly.
