Multiple times each week (generally 6–7 p.m., Wednesday–Friday), visit Travel Portland on Instagram, where we’ll post fun videos from Portland makers and chefs, and live-stream concerts by local musicians.

This month, Travel Portland has partnered with local businesses ChefStable , MadeHere and Tender Loving Empire to highlight local chefs, makers and musicians, respectively. Thank you, partners!

🎨 Martín Martinez of Orox Leather Co. – noon, Wednesday, May 27

Note early start time: This takeover starts at noon. The Martinez family’s tradecraft originated four generations ago in Oaxaca, Mexico. It’s now been passed down to the Orox Leather Co. you see today in Portland — a workshop where our family operates and a store that allows our customers to see their products handcrafted in real time. During this takeover, Martín will lead viewers through how to make a wine caddy at home. To participate, you’ll need:

  • Old denim jeans
  • Old leather belt
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine 
  • Fabric thread

🍳 Katherine Benvenuti and Shaun King of Bark King – 6 p.m., Thursday, May 28

Chef Shaun King and baker Katherine Benvenuti of Southeast Portland’s Bar King will present a tutorial on making a crispy chicken sandwich on na’an-style flatbread. To make the na’an bread, you will need all-purpose flour, buttermilk, salt, yeast and oil or clarified butter. You should have a mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment and a large skillet or griddle. Presented by ChefStable.

Yvonne Fide is a founder of Momo Cocoa Co., makers of exceptionally creamy, vegan cocoa products in Portland. End your week with a live sing-along of alt-indie, pop, and rock songs with our friends at Low Bar Chorale, led by Ben Landsverk.

The Low Bar Chorale is a twice-a-month extravaganza that transforms a local bar into a drop-in sing-along backed by a live band of rotating musicians from Blind Pilot to Brandi Carlisle’s band, and no one cares what you sound like. Jointly founded and run by Music Director/Producer Ben Landsverk and Impresaria/Producer Kate Sokoloff, the group has sung more than 200 songs in bars and stages all over Portland. With no experience and no commitments required, it’s a perfect fit for anyone from show choir megastars to the “karaoke scares the crap out of me” crowd. 🍸 Cocktails With Camille Cavan – April 30

Camille Cavan, bar manager for Quaintrelle, will give viewers a look at her new cocktail kits, now available for pickup, and will also shake up a cocktail live. Camille hosts regular cocktail demos on Instagram Live on Fridays at 1 p.m.

Mississippi Avenue restaurant Quaintrelle is known for chef Ryley Eckersley’s inventive cooking, Camille Cavan’s approachable yet elevated cocktail program, and fine wines from artisan producers including sister property Abbey Road Farm. The restaurant currently offers dinners for delivery and pickup, as well as window wine pickup. Limited-edition Quaintrelle Cocktail Kits cost $20 and make four cocktails. 🍷 Wine Tasting With Nate Ready – April 22

Winemaker Nate Ready and his wife China reside at Hiyu Wine Farm, a 30-acre wine farm in Oregon’s Hood River Valley, where they tend to the vines, animals and gardens. China is an illustrator and designs all of the winery’s labels. Using 108 distinct varietals, they make beautiful wines using biodynamic and permaculture principles. Nate and China will lead a tour of the farm, showing the vines, animals and gardens, then host a tasting of new spring wines in the tasting room. Archived video not available.

🥒 Pickling With Jane Hashimawari – April 23

Chef Jane Hashimawari runs a pop-up called Ippai pdx and also works as the kitchen manager at Milk Glass Mrkt. Jane focuses a lot of her cooking on education. Her pop-up is based on Japanese comfort food she grew up eating, and food that is common in Japanese households but not “mainstream” in America. In this video, Jane will teach a few different pickling ideas. All you’ll need is salt, sugar, vinegar (rice wine preferably), soy sauce and sesame seed oil — and the vegetable of your choice!

🎵 Concert by Ashleigh Flynn and the Riveters – April 18

Ashleigh Flynn and the Riveters

Ashleigh Flynn is a singer, songwriter and musician who grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. During this 1-hour performance she will play acoustic versions of some of her and her fans’ favorite Americana, rock, bluegrass and country songs on guitar accompanied by the harmonica. This set will be uplifting, heartfelt and reminiscent of a living room jam session where everyone comes together to listen, relax, unwind and sing along to some classic songs. 🎨 Art Demo With Mike Bennett – April 8

Since 2019, Mike Bennett has been recycling wood and donated paint into giant cartoon cutouts, giving away over half of his 650+ pieces via scavenger hunts and raising over $17,000 for local and international charities. Whether Mike is sharing behind-the-scenes videos to his 900,000 TikTok followers or hiding cutouts in a local park, he’s always on the lookout for his next project. During the coronavirus situation, he’s painting one cutout a day and sharing them on his Instagram (@mikebennettart) and often leaves them in front of his house for folks to enjoy!

🍳 Cooking With Jordan Curtis – April 10

Jordan Curtis, an account director at Action Mary and part of Travel Portland’s social media team, has a long history of professional cooking in Portland. Once a member of the legendary line at the now-closed Bridgeport Brewpub in the Pearl, he now cooks at home for his friends and family (and on the local morning news from time to time). Jordan loves Portland restaurants and food carts, and can’t wait to visit all his favorite spots again soon.

Portland-based cosmic-Americana-folk duo Dead Lee formed in 2017 when Brian Adrian Koch (current and founding member of indie-rock band Blitzen Trapper) and partner, singer-songwriter Kara Harris, started singing together in their apartment. They soon branched out to playing for friends at parties, special events and tribute nights before deciding to take their love of singing and playing together more seriously.
