Up where the Willamette and Columbia Rivers come together—-that’s where Sauvie Island is. Because most of the island is farmland and wildlife refuge, it makes an idyllic and nearby getaway from the city. Families pick berries and get lost in corn mazes at local farms (Kruger’s, Sauvie Island Farms, Columbia Farms, the Pumpkin Patch, Bella Organic), cyclists ride laps around the island, birdwatchers hike at Wapato Access Greenway State Park (birds are especially plentiful during winter!), and “long walks on the beach” types stroll along the island’s beaches (know before you go: part of Collins Beach is clothing optional). Something for everyone, right?
