The following description was submitted by the event organizer.

Seals have a long history in China — the earliest known seals date back to the 5th century BC, but seals are thought to have started centuries before. Seals were used as signatures on dynastic court documents, personal documents, contracts, and other official papers. They graced works of calligraphy and paintings. Collectors of books and art often added their seals to pieces. Molded from metal or carved from stone, ivory, wood, or jade, seals were traditionally inked red cinnabar paste. Join First Saturday PDX as Dan Lucas provides a brief history of the art, how seals are made and used, and various examples.

Learn more about the history and use of seals, and watch as artist and long-time garden volunteer Dan Lucas demonstrates how to carve a seal.
