“One day life is good, the next you’re treading water. That’s not supposed to happen to folks like us.” The “us” in Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer-winning drama are the good, blue-collar folk in the Rust Belt town of Reading, Pennsylvania, whose stable finances and social bonds start corroding and collapsing amid 21st century union busting and offshoring.
With flecks of wit amid the grit, Nottage dramatizes working class challenges through a hard-hitting story that shows “us” divided and conquered, falling prey to resentments, substance abuse and violence. Christopher Acebo — who was associate artistic director at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival when it premiered the play in 2015 — will direct this production for Profile Theatre." – Oregon Arts Watch
