Directed by Jacques Demy
France • 1967 • 120 mins. • In French with English subtitles

The conclusion of Demy’s unofficial romantic trilogy follows Lola and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg in its focus on French coastal life in Rochefort, near the Nantes of Lola. A candy-colored musical heavily influenced by those of classical Hollywood (and featuring a crucial cameo by one of the genre’s leading lights), Young Girls follows sisters Delphine and Solange (real-life siblings Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac) as the city’s summer fair starts up, their search for lasting love at the heart of events. Expanding outward to include their mother Yvonne, two dashing carnival performers in town for the fair and assorted loves of yore, the film’s scope truly questions each person’s desire to leave Rochefort for the greener pastures of big city life—and love. An unforgettable cavalcade of song, dance and color, Demy’s beloved work was his biggest success, retaining all its charm and plucky spirit today.
