The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
Directed by Jacques Demy
France • 1964 • 91 mins. • In French with English subtitles
Demy’s first true musical is every bit as color- and sun-drenched as the classical Hollywood musicals from which the filmmaker drew so much inspiration. The film charts the emotional journey of star-crossed lovers Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve in the role that shot her to stardom) and Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). Guy, conscripted into the Algerian War and forced to go abroad, must make Geneviève wait for marriage—but as time drags on, Geneviève’s mother has other ideas about her future. Featuring eye-popping interiors, costumes and camerawork, Demy’s operatic film plumbs the depths of youthful emotion, fashioning a romantic tale for the ages.
