Brenda Mallory: Gather Back
The following description was submitted by the event organizer.
In her first solo exhibition at Upfor, artist Brenda Mallory presents new 2D and relief works in an array of materials both found and created, from linen firehose to kiln-formed glass, to addresses ideas of repetition, interference and disruption in nature and human culture. She often combines relatively simple components into complex, abstract compositions, reworking found materials until their original form and purpose are no longer apparent.
Brenda Mallory’s many accolades include a Ucross Fellowship for Native American Visual Artists (2018), a Visual Arts Fellowship from the Native Arts and Culture Council (2016) and a Contemporary Native Artist Fellowship from the Eiteljorg Museum in Indiana (2015), as well as grants from the Oregon Arts Commission and Ford Family Foundation and the Regional Arts and Culture Council. She is a member of the Cherokee Nation and is based in Portland, Oregon.
