The McMenamins brothers started renovating Portland taverns and historic buildings in 1983, and began brewing beer in 1985. The brothers had a hand in establishing the now historic Oregon brewpub bill, which became law in 1985 and subsequently changed the landscape of Portland restaurants—felt today in the multitude of handcrafted ales to choose from wherever you dine. Mike McMenamin explained at the time, “We don’t want to take over the beer market. We just want to have our own identity; we love beer. We’re experimenting all the time. When someone says, ‘You can’t do that,’ we know that’s a good place to start.” That philosophy continues today, with McMenamins’ brewers crafting more than 250 new and unusual house-specific recipes each year. You’ll find McMenamins pubs in neighborhoods across Portland, and sprinkled throughout Oregon–each offering unique ales on tap alongside fresh Northwest pub fare.
