The historic Golden West Hotel, located in downtown Portland, opened in 1906 as a hotel for African-Americans working on the transcontinental railroad. After becoming a social and cultural fixture of the city’s black community, the hotel closed during the Great Depression – but has been brought back to life by local nonprofit, Central City Concern, and offers housing, health and recovery services, employment and peer support to those in need.
