Bula is a Fijian word with many uses. It is a greeting, but also can mean “life” or “to live”. Fijians use it in place of “cheers” before drinking kava, a mildly psychoactive (and totally legal) root drink from the South Pacific. Bula Kava House, a bar dedicated entirely to the kava drink, can help ease any nerves. Served in coconut cup shells, the drink’s mood-altering effect can be be euphoric, but it’s also consumed for relaxation.
