Some of Portland’s most destination-worthy bars just happen to be attached to some of the coolest hotels in town. Here’s where to check-in for the night.
Rock-star bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s exacting bar program (he even has a cocktail book in the works) has made Clyde Common at the Ace Hotel a perennially cool watering hole. Look for barrel-aged negronis as well as house specialties like the Trigger Finger: rye, dry vermouth, Drambuie and caraway liqueur. In 2014, Morgenthaler opened the intimate speakeasy Pepe le Moko downstairs.
With its curvy, leather-banked counter and gold-lit interior, the Driftwood Room at the Hotel deLuxe looks like the Marilyn Monroe of bars. The drinks hold their own with offerings such as the Thai gimlet, which incorporates Mekhong rum, ginger liqueur, a mix of herbs and fresh lime.
From its lofty perch on the 15th floor, the rooftop lounge of Departure at the Nines peers over downtown and Mount Hood. The bar stocks one of the largest saké collections in town, and iconoclastic chef (and Top Chef runner-up) Gregory Gourdet creates addictive Asian-inspired fare like crispy pork belly with pickled cherries, ginger and pumpkin seeds.
Like a log cabin designed by the Jetsons, the Doug Fir Lounge at the Jupiter fills its eastside den with pine beams, mirrored lamps and a glowing bar. But the real draw is the subterranean live-music venue, with nightly acts ranging from up-and-comers like Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. to such established artists as folk-rocker Martha Wainwright.
