For those with a taste for old-fashioned sports, the exciting horse races at Portland Meadows promise adrenaline-filled and family-friendly entertainment. Parking and admission to their location in North Portland means that a day at the races comes at the very low cost of free. Those with cash to burn can indulge in some vintage-style betting by making wagers on the horses they believe most likely to win (there’s even a Guest Services Department for beginners who’d like to learn how to read the racing program and call out a bet to a teller). With about 10 races per day (or every 30 minutes or so) and several food and drink venues, it’s an easy but fun place to spend the day.
Portland Meadows is easily accessible from the MAX Yellow Line and also offers free on-site parking. It’s open most days from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (check the simulcast calendar for specific days).
