When April 20 (“four-twenty” to those in the know) rolls around, cannabis connoisseurs across the country celebrate their love of the bud. And where better to celebrate 4/20 than in a city with a vibrant, legal cannabis culture?
Recreational marijuana use and possession have been legal in Portland since 2016. There are rules, of course: Cannabis can only be smoked or consumed by visitors aged 21 and over, and only on private property, away from public view. (Using cannabis in a public place can lead to a hefty fine, so be careful!) Visitors cannot drive or bike under the influence of the drug, and certainly can’t transport it across state lines.
With those regulations in mind, however, it’s perfect legal to buy, share, receive and give away cannabis. It’s even legal to possess up to one ounce of the stuff — and while that may not sound like a lot, it’s enough for roughly 85 joints, according to the New York Times.
Now that you know the rules, look forward to the 4/20/2020 fun Portlanders will be indulging in next year!
