Hip, Portland-style
First-time visitors to the Pacific Northwest might not immediately capture the essence of the city and region. So we've taken the liberty of providing you a local's perspective on what's cool and hip in Portland. This itinerary includes microbreweries, wineries, superb restaurants, unique stores, shopping areas, bookstores, coffee shops and galleries.
Comin' Around the Mountain
With spectacular Mount Hood dominating Portland's skyline, there's only one thing to do: Go check it out. And the best way is to go through the unparalleled Columbia River Gorge, located about 30 minutes from downtown. The Gorge (local slang) is a volcanic basalt chasm carved by the mighty Columbia River, and it features steep, dark cliffs flanked by spectacular plunging waterfalls. (Did we forget to mention the incredible views?) Then, after climbing out of the Hood River valley and orchards, you'll see Mount Hood rising above the other mountains. Have you played in the snow yet? Well, get going.
Making Waves to the Beach
Equally incredible, the scenic Oregon Coast beckons only 90 minutes away. Dotted by lighthouses, charming communities and wildlife viewing, the coast is a quick daytrip from Portland, and you're guaranteed to come back with great memories.
The Grape Escape
Fact: There are wineries all around the United States. Relatively unknown fact: Oregon's wineries rate as some of the best in the world. Plus, they provide incredible views of the scenic wine country. Visiting Portland-area wineries - where you'll still see the winery owner behind the tasting-room counter - is a perfect way to spend the day. All are within an hour of downtown.
Roses are Red, Tulips are too...
Oregon is home to many of the nation's top nurseries and flower producers, and spring is the ideal time to witness this annual explosion of color. The Willamette Valley is particularly riotous, with tulip, daffodil, iris, daylily and rhododendron farms and gardens brightening the landscape. This tour - which gently weaves in these amazing, delightful stops - will make you want to take up gardening, if you haven't already.
Best of Oregon and Washington
Between the two states, you have a complete vacation! From Seattle's Space Needle to Portland's Saturday Market, from the charming Bavarian village of Leavenworth to unspoiled coastlines and tranquil lakes, this itinerary offers the best of the Pacific Northwest.
