Oregon Convention Center

With nearly one million square feet, the Oregon Convention Center (OCC) reigns as the largest convention facility in the Pacific Northwest.

The facility offers 255,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, 50 meeting rooms, two grand ballrooms, full-service catering and an 800-space, weather-protected parking garage.

Even without a car, the OCC is exceedingly accessible. The facility is located on TriMet’s MAX light rail and has its own station. Since the OCC, like the downtown hotel core, falls within Portland’s Free Rail Zone, connections between it and the downtown lodging properties are always complimentary. Visitors can even get to and from Portland International Airport with ease.

In addition to its eco-friendly light rail connection, the center has several other green features. Large windows wash hallways and lobbies in natural light, reducing the need for electricity. The innovative Rain Garden — designed to masquerade as an elegant water feature — actually scrubs pollutants from the rainwater that drains from the center’s massive roof. The water moves through a cleansing series of waterfalls, settling ponds and native grasses before entering the nearby Willamette River.

In January 2009, the OCC began off setting 100 percent of the carbon emissions from its natural gas use through the Smart Energy program. The program is designed to support projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as a biodigester at an eastern Oregon farm that captures methane gas from cow manure and uses it as a renewable energy source.

In 2010, the OCC will pursue a multimillion-dollar solar project to further reduce the center’s impact on the environment, moving toward a goal of 100-percent renewable energy use for the entire operation.
