Portland Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA)

PCPA entertains more than a million visitors each year and is one of the largest performing arts centers in the nation. The facility encompasses five theaters housed in three separate buildings: The New Theatre Building, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, and Keller Auditorium, which is located five blocks away from the other buildings. The PCPA box office sells tickets to all PCPA events as well as to other events ticketed though Ticketmaster, TicketsWest (formerly Fastixx) and Artistix.

The New Theatre Building
This building has won several awards for design excellence and is heralded for its state-of-the-art facilities. The New Theatre Building houses the Newmark and Dolores Winningstad theaters, Brunish Hall, and an acclaimed four-story rotunda lobby.

Brunish Hall
The newest of PCPA’s performance spaces, this multipurpose hall has been used for chamber music performances, cabaret shows, receptions and special events.

Dolores Winningstad Theatre
Patterned after an Elizabethan-style theater, the Winningstad is home to Tears of Joy Theatre.

Newmark Theatre
Designed for dramatic productions, this Edwardian-style theater’s resident companies include Portland Center Stage.

Keller Auditorium
Known for its excellent acoustics, sightlines and sophisticated stage area, Keller Auditorium accommodates Broadway touring shows and several resident companies, including the Portland Opera, Oregon Ballet Theatre and the Oregon Children’s Theater.

Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
Originally built as a vaudeville house, this 1927 National Historic Register property is noted for its elaborate Italian Rococo Revival architecture. The concert hall’s Broadway marquee is crowned by a 65-foot-high “Portland” sign illuminated with 6,000 pulsing theatrical lights. Resident companies at “The Schnitz” include the Oregon Symphony and the Portland Youth Philharmonic.

ArtistsRep

ArtistsRep is a professional nonprofit theater company dedicated to challenging artists and audiences with plays of depth and vibrancy in an intimate environment. The company presents five plays on its main stage each season, as well as a number of “second stage” productions at selected venues. Season runs September through June. Admission charged.

Do Jump! Extremely Physical Theatre and The Echo Theatre

Opened in 1910 as a silent movie house, The Echo Theatre later transitioned to a primary alternative performance space in the greater Portland area. Home to Do Jump! Extremely Physical Theatre since 1984, The Echo Theatre also serves as a venue for local, regional and national performing artists and as a school for acrobatics and trapeze. Do Jump’s performances combine humor, music, dance, acrobatics and gymnastics – stretching both the limitations of the human body and the expectations of the audience. The Miracle Theatre Group

The Miracle Theatre Group, the Northwest’s largest Hispanic arts and culture organization, has been working its magic on West Coast audiences since its incorporation as a nonprofit organization in 1985. The Miracle Theatre Group oversees three dynamic professional performance companies: Miracle Mainstage, Teatro Milagro and Bellas Artes. Many performances in English. Oregon Children’s Theater (OCT)

This unique theater experience enriches the lives of many children through its presentations of classic and contemporary children’s and family literature. The magic comes alive through fantastic stories, inspiring characters, full-scale sets, and elaborate costumes. OCT also conducts year-round classes for kids 6-18, in-school theater workshops, and an outreach program for economically disadvantaged children. Seasonal. Admission charged.

Portland Center Stage

Originally a branch of the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Portland Center Stage was founded to bring professional theater to Portland and the surrounding region. The company became fully independent in 1994. In 2005, the company will move into its new home in the Pearl District. Portland Center Stage is currently renovating the city's historic armory building, transforming the once-neglected structure into a performance space with a 600-seat main theater and a 200-seat studio theater.

Portland Opera

Ranked among the United States’ top opera companies, the Portland Opera has seen its audiences grow spectacularly in recent years. This emerging interest is due to the company’s emphasis on theatricality as well as musicality, its use of projected English translations, and its anything-but-stuffy approach to opera and musical theater. Artists from around the world join a talented corps of professional local musicians who make up the Portland Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Performances in Keller Auditorium from September through May. Tears of Joy Theatre

Tears of Joy Theatre creates amazing puppet theater that has been recognized nationally for its commitment to excellence and innovation. Three productions have received American puppetry’s highest honor: the Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry. Tears of Joy performs in theaters, community centers, festivals and schools throughout the United States and abroad. In Portland, the company performs at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts.

BodyVox

What are the artistic limits of the human body? BodyVox is forever exploring the answer to that question. The work of this contemporary dance company is characterized by a bold athleticism and inherent theatricality. Its movement surges from years of crosstraining imbued with a fresh curiosity and a fascination about the endless possibilities of the human body in motion. But don’t just take our word for it. BodyVox’s admirers are not limited to the Pacific Northwest. The company has choreographed music videos for Sting and U2, created fashion spectacles for Japanese designer Issey Miyake, and co-choreographed and appeared in the 1998 Academy Awards show.

Oregon Ballet TheatreOregon Ballet Theatre

Established in August 1989, the Oregon Ballet Theatre is known for the excellence of its dancers and the diversity of its repertoire, which ranges from classical favorites to a wide variety of contemporary works. OBT presents a season of five productions at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Performances include the traditional holiday classic The Nutcracker and OBT Exposed!, during which the company moves its rehearsal studios outdoors for two weeks. OBT’s state-of-the-art location at Southeast Sixth Avenue and Belmont Street offers a glass-encased rehearsal studio that pulls the public into the dance experience. Admission charged.

Chamber Music Northwest

What began in 1971 as a summer concert series has become a well-loved Portland tradition. Internationally acclaimed musicians gather each summer from around the world to share the beauty and variety of chamber music with enthusiastic audiences. The Chamber Music Northwest Festival, one of the most successful music festivals in the nation, presents an annual five-week season of concerts on the grounds of Reed College and Catlin Gabel School. In addition to more than 25 summer concerts, Chamber Music Northwest also boasts a family concert, informal pre-concert talks with the artists, open rehearsals, lectures, and an “Encore Series” that takes place at selected venues throughout the year. Oregon Symphony

This virtuoso ensemble presents an array of performances from classical to pop. Past performances have featured the talents of Van Cliburn, Tony Bennett and James Taylor. Portland Baroque Orchestra

Experience the lively and intimate musical ensemble that Strings magazine calls one of the nation’s “finest purveyors of the vitality of early music.” The low-pitch sounds of violins, oboes and trumpets combine to create music both passionate and exhilarating. Works by Bach, Vivaldi, Handel and their contemporaries are performed by musicians from around the world. To achieve periodperfect sound, performers use instruments authentic to the Baroque and Classical periods. Performances are staged on Friday and Saturday nights in the intimate atmosphere of Portland’s historic First Baptist Church (downtown); Sunday afternoons in Kaul Auditorium on the campus of Reed College. Portland Youth Philharmonic

The extraordinary classical music achievements of some of Portland’s finest and most talented youths can be enjoyed at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Dating back to 1924, the orchestra is composed of exceptional students between the ages of 10 and 23. It is the oldest youth orchestra in the United States, and is considered one of the world’s most outstanding. The season runs November through May. Admission charged.
