The South Park Blocks provide the perfect setting for many public gatherings. From the first Saturday of May to the last Saturday of October, the Portland Farmers Market sets up shop from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the shade of the towering trees near the intersection of Montgomery Street. From the first Wednesday of June to the last Wednesday of September, the market’s midweek location is near the intersection of Salmon Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Portland Arts Festival (503.227.2681), an event of the annual Portland Rose Festival, takes place the last weekend of June.

A Caribbean Carifest is presented the last Saturday of July by PSU’s Black Studies Department (503.725.3472). The Homowo Festival of African Arts (503.288.3025), showcasing the culture of Ghana, takes place the third weekend of August.

Several times each month, free performances, rehearsals, previews and lectures are given at noon in the Brown Bag Lunch Series at the Portland Center for Performing Arts. Call 503.274.6555 for a schedule, or check the website at www.pcpa.com. Tours of the New Theatre Building are also offered.

At the annual OBT Exposed you can watch members of the Oregon Ballet Theatre rehearse daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in a tent in the park blocks during the last two weeks of August and Labor Day Weekend
