Portland has a long history as an open, welcoming city with a vibrant LGBT community. On May 19, 2014, a U.S. District Court judge made marriage legal for all couples in the state after overturning Oregon’s ban on same-sex marriage. The Oregon district attorney declined to defend the law when it was challenged in a federal lawsuit.
This decision went into effect immediately. Same-sex couples can legally marry anywhere in the state or in neighboring Washington, where gay marriage was legalized by voters through a 2012 state ballot measure.
